I've done this countless times. It worked perfectly for me. The two seem totally unrelated to me. "In the beginning, the Universe was created. Blue Shift is singleplayer only, so there was no reason to use the latest protocol.

If you aren't/weren't a mapper you might not notice it at all. There's a puzzle in Half-Life that requires the player to jump on two moving platforms, and, if one stops while you're on it, you get gibbed. Doors don't open, toilets are broken, two scientists need you to start an elevator and power fall down!
