Clean the sucker with a paper towel (another page talks about re-lubricating the thing, but that was not necessary in my case).

But this tip REALLY worked. Reply karen says: 2006-10-29 at 3:52 am Have a Dell A940 this worked for me too, thanks. The error 0502 arises mainly in Dell all-in-one printers like Dell A10 940 all-in-one printer, Dell A960 all-in-one printer etc. thought it was dead, then I get one today, come here, and there has been posts.
Next, gently press down on the encoder strip with one finger on each side of the carrier. I had been getting the “0502″ error on my Lexmark 5150. I have printed a few hundred pages with the printer lcd icon showing totally empty. So be patient and I hope this helps!
Most of the refilled are only a few bucks less and all will give a low ink warning. It does appear the encoder strip is out of place, but where exactly is the slot it's supposed to fit into? Who knew it was so simple to fix?! pl.
